Cameroon's President Paul Biya announced his participation in the elections. The head of state wrote about this on his X page.
In his post on the social media page, he emphasized his readiness to continue serving the nation and noted the seriousness of the tasks facing the country. The 92-year-old Biya has been president since 1982.
Cameroon's presidential elections are scheduled for October 12, 2025, and will be held in a single round. The candidate who receives a simple majority of votes wins. The presidential term is 7 years.
In 2008, Biya abolished presidential term limits, allowing him to run indefinitely. Despite widespread allegations of irregularities by the opposition in the last elections held in 2018, he won with 71.28% of the vote.
However, members of the ruling CPDM party are calling on Biya to run again in the elections starting in 2024. At the same time, the opposition and some civil society representatives point out that his prolonged rule is holding back the country's development. Two former allies have already left the ruling coalition and plan to run as independent candidates in the elections.
Biya's predecessor, Cameroon's first president, Ahmadou Babatoura Ahidjo, resigned in 1982 due to health reasons. He had held the position for 22 years since 1960.
