China will host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1. This was announced by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi during a joint press conference with SCO Secretary-General Nurlan Yermekbayev on the evening of July 15.
It was reported that more than 20 state leaders and over 10 heads of international organizations will participate in the summit.
For reference, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization was established in 2001. The organization includes ten countries: Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, India, Iran, and Belarus (from 2024). The meeting of SCO member state leaders will take place in China in late August – early September 2025.
Last year, on July 11, during the NATO summit in Washington, D.C., President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan announced Turkey's intention to join the SCO. This year, Armenia has also expressed its desire to become a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
