Japanese Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Shigeru Ishiba is planning to resign by the end of the month following an election defeat. This was reported by the Yomiuri newspaper, citing his close associates.

It is noted that on July 20, Japan's ruling coalition—the LDP and its partner "Komeito"—lost the majority in the upper house of parliament (the House of Councillors). They secured 47 seats (specifically 39 and 8). As a result, they failed to obtain the required 50 seats for a majority in the 125-seat chamber.

Since its establishment in 1955, the party has almost continuously governed the country, excluding the periods of 1993-1996 and 2009-2012.

For reference, after the election defeat, calls for Ishiba's resignation have intensified within the party. On July 22, a campaign began to collect signatures for an early leadership election. The Prime Minister himself stated that he would resign after concluding tariff negotiations between Japan and the U.S.
