U.S. President Donald Trump announced that starting August 1, a 25% tariff will be imposed on goods imported from India, and that Delhi could face additional "penalties" for its arms and energy trade with Russia.
While criticizing India's purchase of weapons and oil from Russia, Trump stated, "This is wrong when everyone wants to stop the war in Ukraine." Although the U.S. wants to reach a trade agreement with India, major disagreements continue over agriculture and domestic market protection.
The Indian government, in response to Trump's statement, affirmed its firm stance on protecting national interests, farmers, and small business interests. Officials remain optimistic, stating that negotiations are "progressing successfully."
