Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen officially apologized for the incident, stating, "women were subjected to unjust treatment and systematic discrimination, which remains an open wound for the Greenlandic society." The leader of the Greenlandic government also apologized alongside her.

According to reports, in the 1960s and 1970s, Copenhagen promoted the insertion of IUDs without consent among young girls with the aim of curbing population growth. As a result, many women suffered from infertility and psychological trauma.

This "IUD scandal" only became widely known to the public in 2022 through an investigation by Danish radio. To date, 143 victims have filed a collective lawsuit in court, demanding over 6 million dollars in compensation.

The Danish and Greenlandic governments are conducting a joint investigation into the incident. The final report is expected to be published in September.
