The issue of women's rights and sexual violence was a central focus of the political debates taking place in New York within the framework of the 80th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
According to information from the UN press service, one in three women in the world experiences sexual violence at least once in her lifetime.
As emphasized by the President of the General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, to date, there is not a single country where women are fully equal to men.
In some regions, merely speaking about women's rights poses a threat to life.
"No politician, judge, or religious leader can tell our daughters what to do with their own bodies. It is our body — our choice," said Baerbock.
According to her, at the current pace, it will take another 123 years to achieve full gender equality.
If this equality were achieved, global GDP (gross domestic product) would have increased by $7 trillion.
For reference, the UN recorded over 4,500 cases of sexual violence committed during armed conflicts in 2024. Women and girls constitute 93 percent of the victims.
