The United Nations Security Council will hold a meeting today, January 15, on the situation in Iran at the request of the United States. This was announced by the Permanent Mission of Somalia to the UN, which holds the presidency of the Security Council in January.

According to the US request, the meeting will be held in the form of a briefing under the agenda item on the situation in the Middle East. It is scheduled for January 15, 2026, at 3:00 PM New York time.

In Iran, protests began after a sharp drop in the national currency exchange rate on December 28, 2025. They were marked by clashes with police, attacks on administrative buildings, and internet access restrictions. US President Donald Trump stated that Washington is ready to intervene if Tehran uses force against the demonstrators. Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, however, called on the US not to interfere in the country's internal affairs.

Iran has also accused the US and Israel of being behind the unrest at the Security Council. On January 13, Trump called on the protesters to seize power and announced the cancellation of all meetings with Iran. Russia's Foreign Ministry has sharply condemned external interference against Iran.
