During a conversation with journalists on March 9, Donald Trump touched on the issue of negotiations with Cuba and stated that if Havana refuses to make a deal with Washington, the US could "take over the country in a friendly way."
"It would be a friendly takeover. Or not. It doesn't matter because they are, so to speak, on their last breath. They have no energy, no money, and they are in a deep humanitarian crisis," said Trump.
According to him, Marco Rubio is working on a possible deal with Cuba but did not provide specific details about the content of the negotiations.
According to sources from The Atlantic, Cuba could be the next geopolitical target of the Trump administration after Iran and Venezuela.
Also, according to information from The Wall Street Journal, the US administration has begun searching for individuals within the Cuban government who could assist Washington in the process of replacing the current regime.
Sources from USA Today indicated that a potential deal being discussed between Washington and Havana could include a scenario for Miguel Díaz-Canel's departure from power, the status of the Fidel Castro family on the island, as well as agreements in the fields of energy, tourism, and port infrastructure. Under such a deal framework, the US could also potentially lift some sanctions.
