Today, the South Korean court extended the detention warrant for the impeached president Yoon Suk Yeol for declaring a short-term military situation. The previous warrant expired yesterday, January 6.

The Republic of Korea's Yonhap news agency reported this.

According to officials, the Seoul Western District court satisfied the request of the investigators led by the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) for high-ranking officials to extend the warrant period.

Last Friday, law enforcement's attempt to execute the arrest warrant was unsuccessful due to the security service blocking access to President Yoon's official residence in the center of Seoul.

Although the investigators have not disclosed the new validity period of the extended warrant, it is believed to be extended beyond the usual seven days considering the anticipated complications in arresting Yoon.

President Yoon is accused of inciting mass disorder and abusing his powers by declaring a military situation in the country. On December 30, when police attempted to arrest the president, his guards demanded a special warrant and resisted.

The next day, the court decided to issue a warrant, marking the first time in the country's history that an arrest warrant was issued for a sitting president.

The police are expected to attempt to arrest the president again soon as part of executing the warrant.
