President Donald Trump wrote on his social media page that the US is allocating hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies to Canada "for no reason at all".
"We don't need anything they have. Canada cannot survive as a country without the subsidies from the US. Therefore, it should become the 51st state of the United States. In exchange, Canadians would benefit from much lower tax rates and powerful military protection, and there would be no tariffs on trade," — said Trump.
Previously, Trump had signed an order imposing a 25% tariff on imports from Canada, China, and Mexico. A 10% tariff applies to energy resources coming from Canada, and a 25% tariff applies to other goods. This decision has caused a strong reaction in Ottawa.
