Among the victims were two teenagers aged 11 and 17. At least 117 people were injured in the attack, while Ukraine’s State Emergency Service reported a total of 119 injured.

Ukrainian authorities stated that the strike targeted a civilian facility. However, several Ukrainian politicians claim that the actual target was a gathering of a territorial defense unit.

The Russian government has confirmed carrying out the strike. For context, a previous missile attack on Sumy by Russia on April 13, 2025, resulted in 21 deaths and 83 people being injured to varying degrees.
