"A total of 212 campaigns took place in Turkey, in which 286.5 thousand citizens participated," the minister said.
Protesters in Istanbul attempted to storm Taksim Square in the city center, where authorities have been preventing them from entering for many years.
"Police have installed barriers there that will stop the movement and operation of public transport," the dpa agency reported.
