Microsoft founder Bill Gates plans to spend the majority of his fortune improving health and education services in Africa over the next 20 years. This was reported by BBC here.
The billionaire spoke in Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia. He proposed to Africa's young innovators to employ artificial intelligence (AI) to improve healthcare on the continent.
According to the Gates Foundation, three priority tasks have been identified for Africa: 1) preventing maternal and infant deaths; 2) ensuring the next generation survives without being afflicted by deadly infectious diseases; 3) lifting millions out of poverty.
In May, Gates announced that he would give away 99 percent of his fortune. His wealth is projected to reach $200 billion by 2045. According to Forbes, his fortune is expected to be $115.1 billion by 2025.
Mozambique's former first lady Graça Machel praised the announcement, describing it as "help during a crisis." The United States government has cut aid to Africa, including programs for treating patients with HIV/AIDS. This raises concerns about the future of healthcare on the continent.
