As a result of China's political pressure in Hong Kong, the country's last pro-democratic political structure — the Social Democrats League has ceased its operations. This was announced to the media by the organization's leader, Chan Po Yin.

According to party members, they have been fighting for political freedom for many years, but the national security law enacted in 2020 has significantly intensified pressure on them. Since the law was enacted, any protests in Hong Kong against Beijing are being labeled as “terrorism,” “calls for secession,” or “actions against the state.”

For information, the law was further strengthened in 2024: according to it, any action against the state can lead to life imprisonment.

With the dissolution of the Social Democrats League, there is now officially no opposition left in Hong Kong. It is worth mentioning that this is the third political party to dissolve itself in the last two years.

A reminder, Hong Kong was a British colony until 1997, and the “one country – two systems” policy applied to it. However, Beijing has been gradually eliminating these freedoms in recent years.
