Large forest fires have erupted in Turkey's Izmir province, leading to the evacuation of residents from several settlements. This was reported by TRT haber.
It is noted that the fire started in the forest area between the districts of Menderes and Seferihisar and spread rapidly. Izmir Governor Suleyman Elban stated that the fire has not yet been brought under control.
“Due to the wind speed varying from 70 to 117 kilometers per hour, unfortunately, most of the aerial equipment cannot operate. Only two large planes capable of carrying 12 tons of water each are working steadily. Sometimes, when the wind speed decreases to 70 kilometers per hour, it is possible to deploy other aircraft. However, unfortunately, we do not have the capability to utilize helicopters and the rest of the aviation fleet,” he said.
According to the governor, the groups of terrestrial firefighters have been reinforced in the region and in neighboring provinces. The rescue services have at their disposal more than a thousand people, 122 fire trucks, 74 water carriers, and 84 pieces of heavy equipment.
Officials have evacuated three villages, and the relocation of the population of several small districts in the Seferihisar district has begun. There are no deaths or serious injuries reported. However, some residents have sought medical help due to the smoke. The international airport in the province of Izmir has suspended operations. Strong winds are rapidly spreading the fire across the municipality of Gaziemir.
Elban emphasized that the fight against the fire continues under difficult conditions and called on citizens to adhere to safety measures and follow the instructions of the rescue services.
