US President Donald Trump announced that a 35% tariff on all goods imported from Canada will come into effect starting August 1 of this year. The US leader wrote about this on his Truth Social network.
It was noted that Trump stated this decision was implemented because Canada did not cooperate with the US and announced its own tariffs.
"Instead of cooperating with the US, Canada introduced its own tariffs. Therefore, starting August 1, we will apply an additional 35% tariff on goods imported from Canada to the US—this is separate from tariffs applicable to other sectors," wrote the US leader.
For reference, a 25% tariff was previously imposed on goods imported from Canada that were not covered by the trade agreement between the US, Canada, and Mexico.
Additionally, a 10% tariff was applied to energy products. Moreover, Trump announced in late June 2025 that all trade negotiations with Canada would be halted. The reason—Canada's implementation of a digital services tax, which was supposed to take effect on June 30.
In response, the Canadian government introduced quotas on certain steel products and imposed a 50% additional tariff on steel imports exceeding the quota.
At the same time, Canada's Finance Minister stated that these measures were "countermeasures against the US's unjust tariff policy" and emphasized that they were aimed at protecting the national industry.
