According to the Associated Press, the bodies of 68 victims have washed ashore. Preliminary reports indicate that the passengers were primarily Ethiopian citizens.
Migrants traveling from Africa to the Gulf states often pass through Djibouti and Eritrea to Yemen. According to the International Organization for Migration, over 60,000 people have taken this dangerous route in 2024. A similar tragedy in June claimed the lives of 49 migrants.
