According to reports, some driving schools have begun admitting girls for training based on the recommendation of the Socialist Women's Union of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Until now, women had the right to regulate traffic but were prohibited from driving cars. No official statements have been announced regarding permission to obtain driver's licenses yet.
This is not the first liberalization measure. After Kim Jong Un came to power, he lifted the ban on women riding bicycles. According to South Korean media reports, North Korean authorities had previously disapproved of women cycling due to their skirts fluttering in the wind.
North Korean officials have not yet commented on the changes. However, observers assess the opportunity for women to study in driving schools as a sign of ongoing changes in the country.
