Azerbaijani and Armenian leaders have signed a peace agreement mediated by the U.S. to strengthen bilateral economic relations after decades of conflict, reports the Reuters news agency.

"The parties have been in conflict for 35 years, but now they will be long-term friends," Trump said at the White House.

In reality, the dispute between the two countries began in the late 1980s, primarily after Nagorno-Karabakh, a region predominantly inhabited by ethnic Armenians, seceded from Azerbaijan with Armenia's support. Azerbaijan fully regained control of the region in 2023, forcing hundreds of thousands of Armenians to flee to Armenia.

According to Trump, the two states have committed to completely ending the conflict, restoring diplomatic relations, and respecting each other's territorial integrity.

Interestingly, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan praised Trump for his role in resolving the conflict and suggested nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize.

"If not President Trump, who else deserves the Nobel Prize?" said Aliyev.

Donald Trump has been striving to position himself as a global peacemaker since the early months of his second presidential term. The White House considers him a key figure in halting border clashes between Cambodia and Thailand, as well as in brokering peace agreements between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and between Pakistan and India. However, the U.S. leader has yet to succeed in stopping the Ukraine-Russia and Israel-Hamas conflicts.
