On the evening of September 30, a magnitude 6.9 earthquake occurred in the central part of the Philippines. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake was recorded near the city of Palompon at around 22:00 local time.
According to Cebu Province Governor Pem Baricuatro, 27 people were killed and more than 143 people were injured as a result of the natural disaster. Among the dead are also coastguard personnel and a firefighter trapped under the rubble of the San Remigio sports complex.
The Philippine Red Cross has provided medical assistance to more than 60 people in three provinces. The earthquake damaged churches and school buildings, and evacuation efforts are underway in some areas.
A tsunami warning was issued for Leyte, Biliran, and Cebu provinces following the earthquake, but this warning was canceled on the morning of October 1. At the same time, a small explosion was also observed at the Taal Volcano, and smoke was recorded rising to a height of 2.5 km.
Officials announced that inspections are being carried out in schools to assess the damage and safety measures, and classes have been temporarily suspended.
