Chinese scientists have successfully transplanted a genetically modified pig liver into a human body for the first time.
For the experiment, a patient who had part of their liver removed due to a dangerous tumor was selected to receive the modified pig liver as a donor.
According to doctors, the transplanted liver was able to produce important proteins necessary for bile and blood clotting in the human body.
This, in turn, indicated a temporary restoration of liver function.
However, by the 38th day after the operation, serious complications were observed. The patient lived for a total of 171 days with the new liver.
Despite this, experts assess this as a major scientific achievement, as it could open a new path for solving the problem of organ shortage in medicine.
