Discontent is growing within the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) over the awarding of a peace prize to US President Donald Trump. The Guardian reported on this.
It is reported that on December 5, 2025, during the draw ceremony for the FIFA World Cup, FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented Trump with the newly established Peace Prize, the first of its kind in the organization's history. However, not long after, the US launched a military attack on Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, and captured the country's president, Nicolás Maduro.
Furthermore, Donald Trump's announcement that he would not recognize Denmark's sovereignty over Greenland and his declaration that Cuba was "on the brink of collapse" have also drawn criticism.
The publication notes that FIFA has not provided a detailed explanation on what criteria and why exactly the award was given to Trump. One high-ranking source within the organization said this awarding ceremony has caused serious concern within FIFA's leadership and the situation is viewed as a "profound embarrassment."
At the same time, one FIFA official acknowledged that the process of organizing the 2026 World Cup in the USA has now entered a "very delicate and complex" stage.
