The former governor of Mexico's Guerrero state, Ángel Aguirre, has been arrested on suspicion of ordering the destruction of evidence related to the case of 43 students who went missing in 2014. This was announced by the country's Attorney General, Ernestina Godoy.
According to the prosecutor's office, the former governor is suspected of obstruction of justice and forced disappearance. Aguirre, for his part, has previously denied the accusations made against him.
According to the investigation, the 43 students of the Ayotzinapa Rural Teachers' College were kidnapped and killed with the involvement of members of an organized criminal group and police officers in 2014, while they were on their way to a demonstration in Mexico City. So far, the remains of only three of them have been officially identified, while the fate of the rest remains unknown.
According to the Attorney General, new witness testimonies indicate that Aguirre may have held a meeting with senior officials on the destruction of important evidence related to the disappearance of the students.
Independent international experts also stress that the new evidence further strengthens previous conclusions about the possible involvement of state representatives in this crime. According to them, if the surveillance footage had been preserved in time, the chances of determining the fate of the students would have been higher.
It is noted that this event is considered one of the most serious and controversial human rights cases in Mexico's history.
