Venezuela's incumbent president Nicolas Maduro won the presidential election. This was announced by the president of the Venezuelan National Electoral Council, Elvis Amoroso, after the voting results were known.
After counting 80 percent of the votes, it was revealed that Maduro was supported by 5,150,092 voters or 51.2 percent of those who voted.
4,445,978 voters or 44.2 percent of those who voted supported Maduro's main opponent, the candidate from the far-right parties, Edmundo Gonzalez. 4.6 percent of the voters voted for the remaining eight candidates.
The opposition claims that violations occurred during the voting process and plans to contest the results. According to opposition activists, they only have voting records for about 30 percent of the ballot boxes and the electoral body did not immediately announce the results from the polling stations. Many polls before the election had indicated that the opposition could win the election.
