Trump asked Putin to mediate in nuclear negotiations with Iran. Putin agreed.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has agreed to help the former U.S. President Donald Trump's administration in its dealings with Iran. These dealings might include issues related to Iran's nuclear program and support for groups opposing the U.S. across the region, according to sources.
Trump expressed his interest in this matter directly during a phone call with Vladimir Putin in February. A few days later, high-ranking officials from his administration conducted negotiations with Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia, according to sources in Moscow. Due to the sensitivity of the subject, they have refrained from revealing their identities.
White House officials have not immediately commented on this report. Likewise, neither Russia nor Iran has openly confirmed or denied this request.
In response to questions sent to Bloomberg, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "Russia believes that Iran and the U.S. should resolve their mutual issues through negotiation. Moscow is ready to provide all the help it can in this process," he said.
When asked about Russia's offer to mediate between Tehran and Washington, the spokesperson for Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: "For such important issues, many parties may express their readiness to help. From this perspective, it's natural for other countries to offer assistance," said Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Bahai at a press conference in Tehran on Monday.
Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has been trying to restore U.S.-Russia relations. The U.S. had cut off relations with Moscow following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022. On February 12th, Trump spoke with Putin over the phone and directly discussed the issue of ending the war. At the same time, both countries expressed their readiness for cooperation in trade routes and natural resources in the Arctic.
