Japanese heavy machinery manufacturer Komatsu Ltd has been engaged in mine clearing in Cambodia since 1999. In July 2024, Japanese Ambassador Kuninori Matsuda handed over four armored Komatsu excavators to the Ukrainian government. They are equipped with a safe on-site detonation device for infantry mines.
A team led by Professor Hideyuki Savada from Waseda University in Tokyo is working on using artificial intelligence in this area. They are creating a mine detection system using a drone equipped with an infrared camera. This drone can scan areas faster and safer than humans.
"We know that 40% of mine victims are children. While they were playing in the field, a mine accidentally hit them. If this problem is solved, an entire generation of children will be spared from suffering from it," says the Japanese professor.
