At least 25 people died in a road traffic accident that occurred in the evening of August 8 in Kisumu County, western Kenya.
According to Nyanza Regional Traffic Police Commander Peter Maina, the victims were passengers on a school bus heading to a burial ceremony. The vehicle crashed and overturned at the Kisumu roundabout.
Maina stated that the bus, belonging to AIC Naki High School, was involved in the accident around 5:00 PM local time while traveling from Kakamega to Kisumu.
It was emphasized that the driver, approaching the roundabout at high speed, lost control of the vehicle, veered into the opposite lane, and plunged into a ditch.
"Among the deceased are 10 women, 10 men, and an eight-month-old baby girl. The causes of the accident are currently under investigation," Peter Maina told journalists at the scene.
He also added that five people sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment, while another 15, including a child, suffered minor injuries.
Road traffic accidents are frequent in Kenya and across the wider East African region. Roads in these areas are often narrow, poorly surfaced, and riddled with potholes.
Law enforcement officials often blame drivers for speeding.
