On August 17, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan signed four agreements to expand cooperation in the energy sector.

According to the agreements, Uzbekistan plans to invest nearly $243 million to build and modernize power transmission lines and substations in Afghanistan.

The projects include the Surkhan – Dasht-i-Alwan (500 kV) power transmission line, the expansion of the Arghandi substation, the Kabul – Sheikh-Masri (220 kV) line, and the construction of a new Sheikh-Masri substation in Nangarhar.

All work is scheduled to be completed within 18 months. After that, Afghanistan will be able to import up to 800–1000 MW of electricity from Uzbekistan.
