The UK government is preparing to recognize Palestine as an independent state following the end of the visit by former US President Donald Trump.
According to "The Times," Prime Minister Keir Starmer has delayed this matter until Trump's departure.
The source states that Starmer, concerned this issue would become the main topic at a joint press conference scheduled for September 18, did not want to make a statement on Palestine in front of Trump. It was emphasized that the US administration is strongly opposed to the recognition of Palestine.
The UK is expected to announce this decision ahead of the UN General Assembly session. At the session, countries such as France, Canada, and Australia may also announce their recognition of Palestine.
In July, Starmer stated that if Israel did not stop its military operations in Gaza, Britain would recognize Palestine in September. In response, Israel warned that it could suspend defense and security cooperation with London.
To date, more than 140 states have recognized Palestine. The UK government considers this step an important move towards achieving long-term peace.
