U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington recognizes Venezuela's current government as the country's legitimate authority.
The U.S. leader made this statement during a meeting with a number of Latin American leaders in the state of Florida.
"I am pleased to announce this week that we are officially and legally recognizing the government of Venezuela," Trump said.
According to the EFE news agency, Venezuela's interim president, Delcy Rodríguez, praised the U.S. decision and expressed gratitude to Trump.
She emphasized that Caracas is ready to develop long-term cooperation with the U.S. based on mutual trust, equality, and respect for international law.
"We once again reaffirm our commitment to establishing long-term relations with the United States based on mutual trust, equality, and respect for international law," Rodríguez wrote on social media.
