The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Dick Schoof, announced his resignation. He made this statement after the “Freedom Party” (PVV), led by Geert Wilders, declared its withdrawal from the government.
The reason — serious disagreements over migration policy. As a result, the government lost the majority support in parliament.
Schoof's government was formed after the elections in November 2023. At that time, PVV won with 23.49 percent of the votes. However, the prime minister himself is not a member of any party; he is considered an independent politician.
Now, according to the law, Schoof must submit his resignation to King Willem-Alexander. After that, the current government will continue to operate temporarily. The new parliamentary elections will not take place before autumn.
