The diplomatic dispute between Pakistan and Germany is escalating. The reason for this is related to the fate of more than 2,500 Afghan citizens who obtained permits to travel to Germany but remain stranded in Islamabad.
After the Taliban came to power in 2021, Germany had promised to accept these Afghans. However, due to prolonged document verification processes, many Afghans are stuck in Pakistan with expired visas, reports zamon.uz.
According to WELT, Germany's Federal Office for Migration and the police are conducting document checks slowly—the average waiting period has extended to 8 months.
Pakistan is not turning a blind eye to the situation and has set two deadlines for Germany to take the Afghans out. The final deadline expired on June 30. Meanwhile, authorities are conducting raids on homes where Afghans reside.
Approximately 150 individuals have been sent to deportation centers. Some of them have been released following Germany's intervention, but the situation remains tense.
Germany's Foreign Ministry is holding negotiations to halt the deportation of Afghans.
