The 43rd session of the UNESCO General Conference will be held in Samarkand from October 30 to November 13. On November 6, member states of the organization will elect a new Director-General.
Egypt's candidate, Khaled al-Anani, has been nominated for this position, having received the support of 55 out of 58 countries in a previous vote held in Paris. If elected, he will become the first Arab and the second African leader in the organization's history to hold this position.
UNESCO has been led by France's Audrey Azoulay since 2017. The new leader is expected to assume office in mid-November.
