Politicians from five parties in the Swiss parliament have proposed introducing a special tax for foreign drivers passing through the country in transit but not staying overnight. According to the proposal, this "transit tax" would vary depending on the density of traffic flow.

"If congestion is high—the price should be higher, if it's low—it should be cheaper," says Simon Stadler, a representative of the "Center" party and a member of the Uri cantonal council.

According to the deputy, the residents of Uri are tired of the persistent traffic jams that occur on weekends and holidays. In an interview with the press, he mentioned that criticism claiming the new system would disadvantage foreigners "somewhat eased his mind." "Heavy traffic is a burden for the people of Uri," says Stadler.

It is noted that the new tax would be an additional charge on top of the existing annual fee for using Swiss roads—approximately 43 euros.
